Art can create alternate languages and symbolic expression that holds stories of belonging and connection
Art therapy is a therapeutic technique that integrates psychotherapy and creative process to enhance physical, mental and emotional well-being. It is based on the idea that tapping into our creativity by engaging in self-expression can help gain mental clarity, explore our emotions, develop self-awareness and promote our well-being. As the emphasis is on the creative process of self-expression, no special artistic ability or talent is required. The intention of art-making in Art therapy is playful experimentation with self-expression, without having any concerns about achieving perfection.

Take Materials that you feel attracted to in the moment and Go for it
Art materials play an important role in an art therapy session. A variety of materials is presented in the session. Along with art materials like watercolour, gouache, crayons, acrylic, charcoals some non-traditional art materials like found objects, natural materials can also be used in a session. Art materials provide a tangible vocabulary to explore and express emotions, thoughts and feelings. The art made in the session is not for evaluation. The client is invited to connect and reflect on the process of making the selection of art materials and creating the artwork. They serve as the elements through which clients make meaning.
